For many Moroccan families, reunions with relatives living abroad (MRE) are a cherished moment, especially during holiday periods. According to preliminary results from the 2025 National Family Survey conducted by the High Commission for Planning (HCP), in-person meetings with MRE peak during summer and winter vacations, highlighting the importance of these gatherings for maintaining family cohesion.
The survey, which covers a representative sample of Moroccan households, indicates that over 60% of families with members abroad report at least one annual reunion. These meetings often involve extended family gatherings, traditional meals, and shared cultural activities, reinforcing ties across borders.
However, the HCP notes that economic constraints and travel costs can limit the frequency of such reunions for some families. The survey also points to a growing trend of virtual communication, but emphasizes that face-to-face interactions remain irreplaceable for emotional bonding.
As Morocco continues to see significant emigration, particularly to Europe, the survey underscores the role of holidays in preserving family connections. The full results of the 2025 National Family Survey are expected to be published later this year.
