Michael Marra has been elected as the new leader of Scottish Labour, succeeding Anas Sarwar. The North East Scotland MSP took his seat at Holyrood in 2021.
Marra, who has a reputation as a tough scrutiniser and a history buff, previously worked as a trade union official before entering politics. He has been an MSP for the North East Scotland region since the 2021 Scottish Parliament election.
His election comes as Scottish Labour seeks to rebuild support ahead of the next Scottish Parliament election, scheduled for May 2026. Marra has said he will focus on holding the Scottish Government to account and promoting policies to support workers and public services.
Anas Sarwar had led Scottish Labour since 2021. The leadership contest was triggered after Sarwar announced his intention to step down earlier this year.
