Developer 4A Games has officially announced Metro 2039, the next major installment in its acclaimed first-person shooter series. The reveal was made during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, which was livestreamed on June 9, 2026. The game is confirmed for release on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 in Winter 2026.
The announcement was accompanied by an in-engine gameplay trailer, showcasing the game's signature atmospheric and grim depiction of a post-nuclear Moscow. The footage highlights enhanced visuals, tense combat, and the series' hallmark survival-horror elements within the metro tunnels and on the devastated surface.
While specific narrative details remain under wraps, the title suggests a direct continuation of the story from Metro Exodus, set 20 years after the events of the original novel Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The developer has stated the game will continue the story of protagonist Artyom.
4A Games, now part of the Embracer Group, is developing the title using a new iteration of its proprietary 4A Engine. The studio confirmed that the game will also be available on PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as on PlayStation 5, indicating it is not an Xbox exclusive.
