Meta has announced the launch of paid subscription options for its platforms Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, starting in the European Union. The move comes in response to evolving data privacy regulations in the region, allowing users to opt for an ad-free experience for a monthly fee.
According to Meta's official statement, the subscription plans will cost approximately €9.99 per month for web users and €12.99 per month on iOS and Android, covering all linked accounts. This initiative aims to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act and General Data Protection Regulation, which require user consent for targeted advertising.
The subscriptions are currently available only in EU countries, Switzerland, and the UK. Meta emphasized that users who do not subscribe will continue to access the platforms for free with ads, but their data will be used for personalized advertising only after explicit consent.
This marks a significant shift in Meta's business model, which has historically relied on advertising revenue. The company stated that the subscription option provides a choice for users who prefer privacy over free access.
