Several major sports media outlets, including L'Equipe, BeIN Sports, Goal, and the Arabic-language site Koora, have issued corrections after publishing a false historical claim about Morocco's participation in the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The erroneous reports stated that Morocco withdrew from the tournament to protest the participation of South Africa, which was under apartheid rule at the time.

Fact-checking by multiple sources, including AFP, confirms this narrative is incorrect. Historical records show Morocco did qualify for the 1976 AFCON in Ethiopia but withdrew for reasons unrelated to an anti-apartheid protest. South Africa had, in fact, been banned from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) since 1958 and did not participate in the 1976 tournament. The false claim appears to have originated from an unverified social media post.

Following verification, the involved media organizations updated or removed the inaccurate content. L'Equipe appended a correction to its online article, while BeIN Sports and Goal issued similar clarifications. This incident highlights the risk of misinformation spreading rapidly through digital republishing without proper editorial verification of historical facts.
