Universal Pictures and Nintendo have officially announced a sequel to the 2023 animated hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, titled The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, set for release in 2026. The original film grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.
According to a press release from Nintendo on March 10, 2026, the sequel will once again be produced by Illumination and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy returning as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser.
The announcement follows a seven-year gap since the original film's release in April 2023. The sequel is expected to introduce new characters from the Mario universe, including Yoshi and Donkey Kong, though plot details remain under wraps.
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyakawa stated, 'We are thrilled to continue this journey with Universal and Illumination. Fans can expect more adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom.' The film is scheduled for a global release on December 18, 2026.
