A 63-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison for raping a 16-year-old boy on a beach in Waterford, Ireland, after meeting him on a dating app. Neil Elliott, of Milestone Cottage, Cheekpoint, Waterford, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to one count of oral rape, a charge under Section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990.
The court heard that Elliott contacted the teenager through a dating app in July 2023. They arranged to meet, and Elliott drove the boy to a secluded beach in County Waterford, where the assault occurred. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reported the incident to gardaí shortly after.
During sentencing on May 15, 2026, Judge Paul McDermott described the offense as a 'gross breach of trust' and noted the significant age difference between the perpetrator and the vulnerable victim. The judge imposed a sentence of four years, with the final year suspended for two years on strict conditions, including that Elliott undergo sex offender treatment and have no unsupervised contact with minors.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, the teenager said the attack had left him feeling 'broken and scared' and that he struggled with trust and anxiety. The court also noted that Elliott had no previous convictions and had expressed remorse.
Detective Garda Sarah O'Brien of Waterford Garda Station led the investigation. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of minors on dating apps, with gardaí urging parents to discuss online safety with their children.
