According to the July 2026 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, Makerere University has climbed 149 places, moving from 925th to 776th globally. The ranking, released on July 31, 2026, also places Makerere 11th in Africa, up from 13th previously.
The university remains the highest-ranked institution in Uganda and East Africa, according to the Webometrics data. The improvement is attributed to enhanced research impact and increased online visibility, as noted in the ranking's methodology.
Webometrics, produced by the Cybermetrics Lab (a research group of the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC), evaluates universities based on web presence, visibility, and scholarly output. The ranking is updated twice a year, in January and July.
Makerere's rise reflects its ongoing efforts to boost digital engagement and research dissemination, aligning with its strategic plan to enhance global competitiveness.
