Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the Black Stars have the potential to win both the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup if the current team is maintained and developed properly. He made the remarks during a recent public appearance, emphasizing the importance of continuity in the squad.
Mahama, who served as president from 2012 to 2017, highlighted the talent within the current generation of Ghanaian players. He urged football authorities to provide the necessary support and stability to allow the team to grow and achieve its full potential on the continental and global stage.
Ghana's national team has a storied history, having won the AFCON four times (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982) and reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2010. The Black Stars have not won the AFCON since 1982, and their best World Cup performance remains the 2010 run to the last eight.
Mahama's comments come as Ghana prepares for upcoming international fixtures, including qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 World Cup. The team is currently under the guidance of head coach Otto Addo, who returned for a second stint in 2024.
