Danish shipping giant Maersk has inaugurated a scheduled rail service connecting the port of Tangier Med to Casablanca, Morocco's economic capital. The service, which began on August 14, 2026, aims to streamline the movement of goods from ship to shore and onward by rail, according to a company announcement.
The new service integrates maritime arrivals with rail transfer and customs clearance, offering a more efficient alternative to road transport. Maersk stated that the rail link will provide a reliable and frequent connection, reducing transit times and easing congestion on highways.
This initiative underscores Tangier Med's growing role as a major gateway for trade into Morocco and West Africa. The port, located on the Strait of Gibraltar, is one of the largest in the Mediterranean and has seen significant investment in recent years.
Maersk's move aligns with Morocco's efforts to modernize its logistics infrastructure and promote rail freight as a sustainable mode of transport. The service is expected to benefit importers and exporters by offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.
