Gardaí have gathered CCTV footage, including from doorbell cameras at private houses, showing young males attempting to break into cars and houses in County Kildare just hours before five teenagers were killed in a crash on the M9 motorway early on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The collision occurred on the M9 at around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. The five victims, all teenagers, were traveling in a car that left the road and struck a barrier. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí have not yet released the names of the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators believe the group may have been involved in the earlier attempted break-ins, which were reported in the Kilcullen area. The CCTV footage shows several young males trying door handles of cars and houses. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
The road was closed for several hours for a technical examination, causing traffic disruptions. The Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are examining the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
