Lotto NZ has announced a significant overhaul of its Powerball game, marking the first 'matrix change' to the game in 19 years. The changes, which take effect from the draw on Wednesday, 26 March 2025, will increase the top prize potential but also alter the odds of winning.

The new matrix changes the format from 40 balls to 50 balls for the main numbers, while the Powerball itself will be drawn from 10 balls instead of 10. This adjustment makes the top prize harder to win, but allows it to grow larger before it must be won. Lotto NZ's last major matrix change for Powerball occurred in 2007.

Chris Lyman, Lotto NZ's Chief Executive, stated the changes are designed to create bigger, more exciting jackpots. "We know our players love the thrill of big jackpots, and the new Powerball will help create these more often," Lyman said. The changes were approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs in late 2024.
