The survey, which included responses from over 5,000 LGBTIQ+ individuals worldwide, found that 68% now research the legal and social climate of destinations before booking, up from 52% in 2020.
Safety concerns are the primary driver, with 74% of respondents saying they have avoided at least one country due to anti-LGBTIQ+ laws or attitudes. Popular destinations like the United States and some European countries have seen a decline in LGBTIQ+ tourism, while more progressive nations such as Canada and New Zealand have seen an increase.
The survey also highlighted that 41% of respondents have changed their appearance or behavior while traveling to appear less visibly LGBTIQ+. This includes avoiding public displays of affection or altering clothing choices.
Travel industry experts note that this trend is influencing marketing strategies, with more destinations promoting inclusive policies and safe spaces. However, they caution that legal protections vary widely, and travelers should always check official government advice.
