Rana Jaber, a Lebanese mother, had promised her husband that if they were blessed with a daughter, she would be named Narjis, Arabic for daffodil. After having twin boys, the family welcomed Narjis, a girl her mother dreamed of dressing up.
On March 26, 2026, Narjis Jaber, a child, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the town of Hanin in southern Lebanon. The strike was part of a series of exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military along the border, which have escalated following the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
"My heart is breaking," Rana Jaber told reporters, mourning the loss of her daughter. The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement on both sides of the Lebanon-Israel border.
International organizations, including the United Nations, have repeatedly called for a cessation of hostilities to prevent further loss of civilian life. The ongoing violence continues to destabilize the region, with no immediate diplomatic resolution in sight.
