The English Football League (EFL) has announced changes to the League Cup (Carabao Cup) format for the 2026/2027 season. The new structure will feature a group stage for the first time, replacing the traditional straight knockout format in the early rounds.
Under the new format, the 72 EFL clubs will be divided into 16 groups of four or five teams, with each team playing three group matches. The group winners and runners-up will advance to a knockout phase, which will include Premier League clubs entering in the third round.
The changes aim to reduce fixture congestion and increase competitive balance. The final will remain at Wembley Stadium, scheduled for February 2027.
