Former Belgian international Laurent Ciman, now an assistant coach with the Vancouver Whitecaps, is serving as a guide for the Belgian national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Ciman, who played for the Whitecaps from 2015 to 2017, has firsthand knowledge of the conditions in Vancouver, one of the host cities.
In a recent interview, Ciman addressed concerns about the potential impact of heat during the tournament, which is scheduled for June and July 2026. 'In Vancouver, the temperature won't be a factor, even if there's a heatwave,' he said, noting the city's typically mild summer climate. He emphasized that the city's coastal location moderates temperatures, making it unlikely to experience extreme heat like some other host cities.
The Belgian team is expected to play some group-stage matches in Vancouver, and Ciman's insights are valuable for logistical planning, including training facilities and accommodation. The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams, with matches spread across 16 cities in three countries.
