Amir Hamza, a founding member of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lahore on Wednesday, according to Pakistani police and hospital officials. He was admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
LeT, designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the United States, and India, is accused of carrying out numerous attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people. Hamza is a senior figure within the group's leadership structure.
Local police in Lahore confirmed the shooting incident in the city's Islampura area but did not provide further details on the perpetrators or a possible motive. An investigation is underway.
The shooting occurs amid ongoing international scrutiny of militant groups operating within Pakistan. The Indian government has long accused LeT of conducting cross-border terrorism.
