A new study published in the journal Science of The Total Environment has found that young scientists who frequently handle laboratory chemicals and consume few antioxidant-rich foods may be more likely to report symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, pallor, and easy bruising. The research, conducted among university students, highlights potential health risks associated with occupational exposure in academic laboratories.
The study surveyed 1,200 university students in Brazil, assessing their exposure to chemicals like benzene, xylene, and formaldehyde, as well as their dietary habits. Participants who reported frequent chemical handling and low intake of fruits and vegetables had significantly higher odds of experiencing the listed symptoms. The authors suggest that antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals caused by chemical exposure, may play a protective role.
Lead author Dr. Maria Fernanda Hornos Carneiro emphasized the importance of safety measures and nutrition: "Our findings indicate that a balanced diet rich in antioxidants could help mitigate some adverse effects of chemical exposure in laboratory settings." The study also calls for improved ventilation and personal protective equipment in university labs.
While the study is observational and cannot prove causation, it adds to growing evidence about the health impacts of low-level chemical exposure. The researchers recommend further studies to confirm the findings and explore dietary interventions as a preventive strategy.
