Former Kano State Governor and 2027 vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained that his decision to pair with Peter Obi in the upcoming presidential election was driven by national interest and equity. He made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja on August 16, 2026.
Kwankwaso also addressed the health status of former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, stating that both are in good health. He dismissed rumors of any rift between him and the two politicians.
The alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi has been a subject of speculation, with some political analysts suggesting it could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. Kwankwaso emphasized that the alliance is not about personal ambition but about the future of Nigeria.
He called on Nigerians to support the coalition, saying it offers a credible alternative to the current administration. The Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Labour Party are expected to formalize their alliance in the coming weeks.
