A New Zealand designer has won the supreme award at the 2026 World of WearableArt (WOW) Awards, held in Wellington. The winning garment, titled 'Ethereal Night Goddess', was inspired by the night sky and features intricate lighting and fabric work.
The awards, now in their 38th year, celebrate innovative wearable art from around the world. This year's competition attracted entries from over 20 countries, with finalists showcasing a diverse range of materials and techniques.
Husband and wife team Erna and Karl Van Der Wat, regular WOW finalists and winners, received the Runner-Up Award for 'Armour of Pain'. The piece was inspired by Erna's journey with chronic pain and was praised by judges as a fearless and deeply personal work.
The supreme award winner receives a cash prize and international recognition, further cementing New Zealand's reputation as a hub for creative wearable art.
