Health authorities in Kenya have issued a high-risk malaria alert for Kisii and Nandi counties for the months of April and May 2026. The warning is based on a joint alert developed by the Kenya Meteorological Department, the Ministry of Health, and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
The alert correlates forecasted heavy rainfall during the long rains season with an increased risk of malaria transmission. The expected weather conditions are conducive to the breeding of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, particularly in these highland areas.
Residents in the affected counties are advised to take preventive measures, including sleeping under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, using repellents, and seeking prompt medical attention if they experience malaria symptoms such as fever, chills, and headache.
The Ministry of Health has stated that it is prepositioning malaria drugs and diagnostic kits in health facilities across the counties to ensure a rapid response to any surge in cases. Public health campaigns are also being intensified to raise community awareness.
