KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — Former Umno youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin has officially rejoined the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), the party that expelled him in 2023. In a statement on his verified Facebook page today, Khairy expressed his gratitude for being readmitted and stated he has no preconditions for his return.
"I am ready to work with all levels of the party leadership to restore public confidence in Umno," Khairy wrote. He was expelled from the party in January 2023 after contesting the party presidency against incumbent Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
His return comes as Umno, a key component of Malaysia's unity government, seeks to rebuild its support base ahead of future elections. Party president Zahid Hamidi confirmed the reinstatement, welcoming Khairy back into the fold.
Political analysts note that Khairy's return could bolster Umno's appeal among younger and more moderate voters, though internal party dynamics remain complex. No specific role for him within the party structure has been announced.
