Mwangi made the remarks in Bordeaux, France, where Shujaa finished 11th in the Division 1 competition.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Sports, Mwangi acknowledged the team's efforts and emphasized that the government remains dedicated to developing rugby in Kenya. He noted that the team's performance, while not meeting the target of promotion, showed promise and that continued investment in training and infrastructure would be prioritized.
Shujaa's 11th-place finish in Bordeaux means they will remain in the second tier of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series for the upcoming season. The team had aimed for a top-eight finish to secure promotion to the elite division. The Ministry of Sports confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the Kenya Rugby Union to address the team's preparation and competition schedule.
Mwangi's statement in Bordeaux reassured players and fans that the government's financial and logistical support will not waver, with a focus on long-term development rather than short-term results.
