A coalition of Kenyan organizations has officially launched the Food Policy Coalition Kenya (FPCK) to advocate for policies that create healthier food environments and address the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The coalition was established on Friday, March 25, 2026, bringing together legal, ethical, health, and consumer rights groups.

The founding members include the Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN), the Consumer Grassroots Association (CGA), and the NCD Alliance Kenya. The coalition aims to tackle issues such as the marketing of unhealthy foods, front-of-package warning labels, and food composition standards.

NCDs, including diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases, are a leading cause of death in Kenya, accounting for over 50% of total hospital admissions and 39% of annual deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The coalition argues that unhealthy food environments are a major driver of this crisis.

The FPCK plans to engage with policymakers, conduct research, and mobilize public support to advance evidence-based food policies. Its formation responds to a growing national and global push for regulatory measures to promote healthier diets and reduce NCD-related mortality.
