Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo will not run in the Preakness Stakes next weekend, trainer Cherie DeVaux announced Wednesday. DeVaux and owners decided to skip the Preakness and set their sights on the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course.
Golden Tempo, a 3-year-old colt, won the 150th Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs. The horse is trained by Cherie DeVaux and owned by a partnership that includes Gary Barber and Wachtel Stable.
The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, is scheduled for May 16 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Golden Tempo's absence means there will be no Triple Crown attempt this year.
DeVaux said the horse will be pointed toward the Belmont Stakes, which will be run at Saratoga for the first time due to construction at Belmont Park. The 1 1/2-mile race is scheduled for June 6.
