The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has announced that refilling of the Kearney Canal is scheduled to begin next week. The canal, a key water source for irrigation and power generation, was drained earlier this year for critical maintenance and repair work on its lining and control structures.
NPPD stated that the work was necessary to ensure the long-term reliability and efficiency of the infrastructure, which diverts water from the Platte River. The utility coordinated the project with local irrigation districts to minimize impact on the agricultural season.
Officials confirmed that the refilling process will be monitored closely. The return to normal operations is expected to support irrigation for the upcoming growing season and maintain water flows for the associated hydroelectric facility.
