External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, 2025, where he called for urgent reforms to multilateral institutions. He warned that the international order is under growing strain from intense competition, geopolitical tensions, and ongoing conflicts.
Jaishankar emphasised that the world is facing multiple crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and regional conflicts, which have exposed the limitations of existing global governance structures. He argued that the UN Security Council must be expanded to reflect contemporary realities, including permanent representation for India and other emerging powers.
The minister also highlighted the need for reformed multilateralism that is more representative, responsive, and effective. He noted that India has consistently advocated for a rules-based international order and has contributed to UN peacekeeping missions and development initiatives.
Jaishankar's remarks come amid heightened global tensions, including the war in Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and rising US-China rivalry. His call for reform echoes longstanding demands from the Global South for greater voice and participation in international decision-making.
