A group of Italian and Moroccan academics has expressed support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region. The panel, composed of university professors and researchers, highlighted the plan as a viable solution to the long-standing dispute.
The endorsement came during a seminar organized by the Italian-Moroccan academic network. Participants emphasized the autonomy proposal's alignment with international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions, which call for a realistic and compromise-based solution.
Morocco's autonomy plan, first presented in 2007, proposes self-governance for the Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. It has received backing from several countries and international bodies, though the Polisario Front continues to advocate for independence.
The academics' statement underscores growing international academic support for the Moroccan initiative, which they argue could bring stability and development to the region.
