BEIRUT, May 2, 2026 – Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon killed at least seven people and wounded several others on Saturday, according to Lebanese security sources. The strikes occurred despite a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that has been in place since November 2024.
The attacks targeted areas near the border, including the town of Taybeh. Lebanese officials reported that the dead included civilians, though specific identities were not immediately confirmed. The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to rocket fire from Lebanon into northern Israel earlier in the day, which caused no casualties.
The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France, ended months of cross-border fighting that escalated after the Gaza war. However, both sides have accused each other of violations. Hezbollah has not officially commented on Saturday's events.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) called for restraint, urging all parties to adhere to the ceasefire terms. The incident raises fears of a broader escalation in the region.
