Seven Irish citizens who were detained after Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla have been handed over to the Greek authorities, its organisers have said. The seven were taken “along with hundreds of others”, said Karen Moynihan, a spokesperson for the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
The flotilla, which aimed to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza, was intercepted by Israeli forces on [date not verified]. The Irish activists were among dozens of international participants. After being held, they were transferred to Greece, where they were released.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was providing consular assistance. The activists have since returned to Ireland or are in the process of doing so. The incident has drawn criticism from Irish political figures, who called for an end to the blockade.
