The Indian government has announced a significant increase in the daily quota of subsidized 5kg LPG cylinders for migrant laborers across the country. The move, part of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), doubles the daily allocation from 50,000 to 100,000 cylinders specifically for this demographic.

This policy is designed to address the cooking fuel needs of migrant workers, who often lack permanent addresses and formal documentation, making access to the subsidized cylinders difficult. The enhanced quota aims to ensure a more reliable supply through the network of LPG distributors nationwide.

The decision was confirmed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Officials stated the increase is a targeted intervention to support the welfare of migrant laborers, a group whose mobility can complicate access to standard welfare schemes. The cylinders will continue to be provided at the subsidized rate applicable under the Ujjwala scheme.

Industry sources indicate that oil marketing companies have been instructed to implement the new quota system effectively. The government has emphasized that this measure is part of ongoing efforts to expand energy access and support vulnerable households, with a focus on portability of benefits for migrant populations.
