The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Mauritanian economist Zeine Ould Zeidane as the new Director of its African Department, effective April 1, 2026. He succeeds Abebe Aemro Selassie, who held the position for five years.

Zeidane brings extensive experience in economic policy and international finance. He previously served as Mauritania's Minister of Economic Affairs and Development and held senior positions at the World Bank and the Islamic Development Bank. His career has focused on development economics, fiscal policy, and regional integration in Africa.

The appointment was announced by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who stated that Zeidane's deep knowledge of the continent's challenges and opportunities would be invaluable. The African Department oversees the IMF's work with 45 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, providing policy advice, financial support, and capacity development.

Zeidane's leadership comes at a critical time as many African economies face challenges from climate shocks, high debt burdens, and global economic uncertainty. His mandate will include helping countries build resilience and foster sustainable, inclusive growth.
