The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has confirmed that players who cover their mouths to hide discriminatory remarks will receive a direct red card. The decision was announced during IFAB's annual general meeting on March 3, 2026, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
According to IFAB's official statement, the new rule aims to prevent players from hiding offensive language from cameras and officials. Referees will have the authority to issue a red card immediately if they believe a player is covering their mouth to conceal discriminatory speech.
The measure is part of broader efforts to combat discrimination in football. IFAB also approved trials for sin-bins (temporary dismissals) for dissent and tactical fouls, as well as a rule allowing only team captains to approach the referee during disputes.
IFAB Secretary General Lukas Brud confirmed the changes, stating they are designed to improve respect and transparency in the game. The new mouth-covering rule will apply at all levels of football once implemented by national associations.
