Yemen's Houthi rebels, officially known as Ansar Allah, have conducted numerous attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 2023. The group states its actions are in solidarity with Palestinians and in response to the war in Gaza, targeting vessels they allege are linked to Israel, the United States, or the United Kingdom.
Despite the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and periodic escalations between Israel and Iran, the Houthi campaign has remained focused on maritime targets. Analysts note that while the Houthis are aligned with Iran, their capabilities and primary objectives are regional, centered on Yemen and the Palestinian cause, rather than initiating a direct, broader war. A significant U.S.-led military operation, including airstrikes, has been underway to counter these attacks and protect shipping lanes.
The situation remains a persistent security and economic challenge, disrupting global trade, but has not triggered the wider regional ground war some feared. Diplomatic efforts to end the war in Yemen itself continue separately, with a UN-brokered truce largely holding since 2022 despite the offshore violence.
