A four-year-old girl died while her two younger siblings sustained burn injuries after a fire razed a makeshift house in Suba Central subcounty, Homa Bay, police said. The incident was reported on June 17, 2026, at about 1:02 am.
According to police, the fire started from a kerosene lamp that fell over. The children were asleep when the fire broke out. The mother, who was outside at the time, heard screams and tried to rescue them but was unable to save the eldest.
The two injured siblings, aged two and one, were taken to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital for treatment. Their condition is reported as stable.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The bodies of the deceased child have been taken to the mortuary.
