Health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have reported a sharp rise in hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases, with two child deaths recorded in the week of March 16-22, 2026. The city's Center for Disease Control (HCDC) confirmed the fatalities involved a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old child.

According to official data, the city recorded 529 HFMD cases from March 2 to 8, a significant increase from the previous four-week average of 424 cases. Infections have risen in 117 out of 168 local wards and communes, with 37 areas reaching alert levels. The HCDC noted the situation is more severe than the same period in 2025.

The city's hospitals are under strain, having treated 138 patients transferred from other provinces. Health officials attribute the outbreak to the circulating Enterovirus 71 (EV71) strain, which is known to cause more severe complications. The HCDC has urged parents and schools to strengthen preventive hygiene measures.
