Cross-border hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have intensified significantly since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. The fighting, involving rocket, missile, and drone attacks, represents the most serious escalation since the 2006 war between the two sides.
The conflict has caused widespread displacement on both sides of the border. As of early 2026, tens of thousands of civilians in northern Israel and southern Lebanon remain unable to return to their homes due to the persistent threat of attacks. International diplomatic efforts, led by the United States and France, have so far failed to broker a lasting ceasefire.
Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and is a powerful political and military force in Lebanon, has stated its attacks are in solidarity with Hamas. The Israeli government has repeatedly warned it will take military action to restore security if diplomacy fails, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
The sustained clashes have exacerbated Lebanon's severe economic and political crises, straining its infrastructure and deepening public anxiety over the potential for a full-scale war that the country is ill-equipped to handle.
