Former Celtic striker John Hartson has stated that he believes Roberto Martinez is an unlikely candidate for the vacant managerial position at Celtic Park. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Hartson cited the Portugal national team manager's current high salary as a significant financial obstacle for the Scottish champions.
Martinez, who has been in charge of the Portuguese national side since January 2023, is reportedly on a substantial wage. Hartson argued that Celtic would be unable or unwilling to match these financial demands, making a move for the Spaniard improbable. The managerial position at Celtic became available following the departure of Ange Postecoglou to Tottenham Hotspur in June 2023, with Brendan Rodgers having since taken over.
Other names, including former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers who returned to the club in 2023, had previously been linked before his appointment. The search for a new manager is a recurring topic of discussion, but Hartson's comments suggest that from a financial perspective, Martinez is not a realistic target for the club at this time.
