UK officials have confirmed a third suspected case of hantavirus in a British national on the remote South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha. The outbreak, which has been linked to a luxury cruise ship, has already resulted in three deaths: a Dutch couple and a German national.
Meanwhile, a KLM flight attendant who was potentially exposed to the virus has tested negative, according to airline and health authorities. The crew member had been in contact with passengers from the affected cruise.
Hantavirus is a rare but severe respiratory disease transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their droppings. The outbreak on Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory, has prompted heightened surveillance and public health measures.
Local health officials are working with international partners to contain the spread and monitor suspected cases. The island's population of around 250 people is now on alert, with travel restrictions and hygiene protocols in place.
