Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech is on track to begin operations at its new electric vehicle battery plant in Kénitra, Morocco, in August 2026, according to company statements and local reports verified as of May 10, 2026.
The facility, located in the Atlantic Free Zone near Rabat, represents a major investment in Morocco's growing automotive sector. Gotion announced plans for the plant in 2023, with an initial capacity of 20 GWh per year, expandable to 100 GWh. The project is part of Morocco's strategy to become a hub for EV battery production, leveraging its proximity to European markets and access to raw materials.
Construction began in 2024, and the plant is expected to create thousands of jobs. Gotion has not disclosed the exact investment amount, but earlier reports estimated it at around $6.4 billion over several phases. The August 2026 start date aligns with the company's timeline for the first phase.
This development positions Morocco as a key player in the global EV supply chain, alongside other battery projects in the region. Gotion's Kénitra plant will supply batteries to automakers including Volkswagen, a major shareholder in the company.
