Multiple art galleries at Singapore's Gillman Barracks have signed lease extensions, despite the site's confirmed end-date of 2030, according to a report by The Straits Times on July 23, 2026. The extensions, which vary in length, allow tenants to remain beyond the original 2026 expiry, with some committing until the 2030 closure.
The move comes as the arts hub, managed by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), seeks to maintain momentum ahead of its planned redevelopment. Gallery owners expressed cautious optimism, noting that the extended leases provide stability for planning exhibitions and attracting international collectors.
Industry observers expect visitor numbers to rise in the coming years, driven by renewed interest in Southeast Asian contemporary art and the site's unique colonial-era setting. However, the 2030 deadline remains a key consideration for long-term investments.
The Gillman Barracks site, located in the Alexandra Road area, was launched in 2012 as a dedicated arts cluster. Its eventual redevelopment is part of broader urban planning initiatives in Singapore.
