Ghana's installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity has reached 276 MW, according to the Energy Commission's 2025 Electricity Supply Plan. The figure reflects both utility-scale and distributed solar installations across the country.
The growth has been driven by a mix of utility-scale projects and smaller installations. The 50 MW Bui Solar PV project, developed by the Bui Power Authority, is among the largest grid-connected plants. The Volta River Authority also operates solar facilities, while the Energy Commission's Renewable Energy Master Plan targets 1,363 MW of renewable capacity by 2030, including solar.
Solar remains a small share of Ghana's generation mix, which is dominated by hydro and thermal sources. The country's total installed capacity is around 5,500 MW. Grid stability and financing have been cited as challenges for faster solar expansion.
Ghana has committed to increasing renewable energy in its electricity mix under its Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. The government has also promoted mini-grids and solar home systems for off-grid communities.
