Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that Ghana explored the possibility of appointing a top-class coach before eventually settling on Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars. Adams made the revelation during a press conference on April 28, 2026, addressing the national team's managerial situation.
According to Adams, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) engaged in preliminary discussions with representatives of several high-profile coaches, but ultimately chose Queiroz due to his extensive experience and availability. The Portuguese coach, who previously managed Real Madrid and the Iran national team, was officially appointed on April 15, 2026, on a two-year contract.
Adams did not name the other coaches considered, citing confidentiality agreements. He emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of Ghanaian football, aiming to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and improve the team's performance in upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
The Black Stars have been without a permanent head coach since the resignation of Otto Addo in December 2025. Queiroz's first match in charge is expected to be a friendly against Ivory Coast in June 2026.
