Germany has announced plans to acquire a 40% stake in KNDS (KMW+Nexter Defense Systems), a joint venture with France, as part of a broader agreement to deepen bilateral defense cooperation. The deal, reported on June 23, 2026, aims to consolidate European defense manufacturing capabilities.
KNDS, formed in 2015, is a leading manufacturer of armored vehicles and artillery systems, including the Leopard 2 tank and Caesar howitzer. The German government's move to increase its stake from the current level (previously held by KMW) is seen as a strategic effort to ensure national control over key defense assets while maintaining the Franco-German partnership.
French officials have confirmed the negotiations, emphasizing that the agreement will not alter the existing governance structure of KNDS. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the end of 2026.
This development comes amid heightened European focus on defense autonomy and industrial consolidation, following geopolitical tensions and calls for increased military spending within NATO. The deal is projected to enhance joint development projects, such as the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS), a next-generation tank program.
