The comments come amid ongoing tensions between the US and Germany over defense spending and NATO commitments. Trump, who is running for president again in 2026, has repeatedly criticized Germany for not meeting the NATO target of spending 2% of GDP on defense. Germany currently spends about 1.5% of its GDP on defense, according to NATO estimates.
Baerbock emphasized that Germany has been in close consultation with NATO allies and is prepared to adjust its defense posture if necessary. 'We have been working intensively on this issue for months, and we are ready for any scenario,' she said. The German government has also increased its own defense spending in recent years, aiming to reach the 2% target by 2027.
