KRC Genk has received an unexpected financial boost of €6 million, thanks to a sell-on clause linked to former player Vincent Kompany. The windfall comes from Kompany's transfer from Anderlecht to Burnley in 2022, which included a clause benefiting Genk.
According to reports, the clause was activated after Kompany's subsequent move to Bayern Munich as an assistant coach, triggering a payment to Genk. The Belgian club had previously sold Kompany to Anderlecht in 2019, but retained a percentage of any future transfer fees.
Genk's CEO Erik Gerits confirmed the payment, stating, 'This is a welcome surprise that will help us invest in our youth academy and infrastructure.' The club plans to use the funds to strengthen its development programs.
The €6 million payment is a significant sum for Genk, which has a history of developing young talent. Kompany, who began his career at Genk, has maintained ties with the club, and this financial boost underscores the value of sell-on clauses in player transfers.
