Spain midfielder Gavi has stated that Argentina's Leandro Paredes should not be suspended for his involvement in the confrontation that occurred after the 2022 World Cup final. The incident took place following Argentina's penalty shootout victory over France on December 18, 2022.
According to reports, Paredes, along with Argentina teammates Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, as well as assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were involved in the heated exchange. Gavi, who played for Spain in the tournament, expressed his opinion that disciplinary action against Paredes would be unwarranted.
"I don't think Paredes should be suspended," Gavi said, as quoted by Spanish media. "These things happen in the heat of the moment after a big game." The Spanish international emphasized that the emotions of a World Cup final can lead to such incidents.
FIFA has not announced any formal disciplinary proceedings against Paredes or other Argentina personnel as of July 23, 2026. The governing body typically reviews such incidents but has not taken public action in this case.
