Gennaro Gattuso has resigned as head coach of the Italy national team. The decision follows Italy's 2-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, April 1, 2026.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed his departure on Thursday, April 3. Gattuso, a 2006 World Cup winner as a player, had been in charge for less than a year, taking the role in July 2025.

His tenure ended with a record of three wins, two draws, and three losses. The defeat in Zenica leaves Italy with significant challenges in their qualifying campaign for the 2026 tournament.

The FIGC has stated that the search for a new head coach will begin immediately, with an announcement expected in the coming days.
