ZURICH, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Gianni Infantino's position as FIFA president looks untenable following his failed plan to sell a stake in the World Cup's commercial rights, the head of Europe's professional football leagues said on Sunday.
Claudius Schaefer, chairman of the Association of European Professional Football Leagues, told a news conference that Infantino's position was "unacceptable" after the FIFA Council rejected the proposal to sell a minority stake in a new entity that would manage the commercial rights for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.
The plan, which was first reported last month, had been criticized by European clubs and leagues who feared it would reduce transparency and increase costs. The FIFA Council's decision to reject the plan was announced on Friday.
Schaefer said the failed proposal raised questions about Infantino's leadership and called for a review of FIFA's governance. "We need to see how we can move forward," he said.
