The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is set to begin repairs on the Sanibel Causeway, a critical link to Sanibel Island, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022. The project will address structural issues and improve resilience against future storms.
According to FDOT, the repairs will include replacing damaged bridge sections and reinforcing the causeway's foundations. The work is scheduled to start in late 2026, with an estimated completion date in 2028. The total cost is projected at $250 million, funded by state and federal disaster recovery funds.
Sanibel Island residents and businesses have long awaited these repairs, as the causeway is the only road access to the island. Temporary fixes have been in place since the hurricane, but the new project aims to provide a long-term solution.
